What is areola size reduction?

Areola size reduction is a surgical procedure aimed at decreasing the circumference of the areolas, often for aesthetic reasons. This intervention is particularly sought after by women who find their areolas too large or disproportionate to the size of their breasts.

Indications for areola reduction surgery

The indications for areola reduction surgery can be varied:

  • Disproportionate areolas: When the areolas are significantly larger than normal and appear disproportionate to the size of the breasts.
  • Areola asymmetry: If one or both areolas show a noticeable difference in size, shape, or position, and affect the aesthetic harmony of the breasts.
  • Post-pregnancy changes: Areolas can stretch or increase in size after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Post-breast surgery: Following breast reduction or augmentation, the areola size may need adjustment to harmonize with the new breast size.
  • Aesthetic motives: Some patients may choose this surgery purely for aesthetic reasons, if they are simply not satisfied with the appearance of their areolas.

Procedure

The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the case. It is an outpatient surgery that takes approximately 1 hour.

The “round block” technique is a surgical method used to reduce the size of the areola. This technique is known for being less invasive and for its ability to minimize scarring. The round block method involves making a circular incision around the areola to remove a peripheral strip of skin. The surgeon then reduces the diameter of the areola by bringing the edges of the incision together and carefully suturing them. This method creates an almost invisible scar as it follows the natural contour of the areola.

Areola size reduction can be performed alone or in conjunction with other breast surgeries, such as breast augmentation or reduction.

Postoperative care

Following the procedure, the pain is moderate and usually subsides a few days after the operation. Swelling and bruising around the areola are generally mild, with near-total resolution expected in about ten days.

The bandage will be removed at the first postoperative appointment, approximately one week after the procedure. It will be replaced with a waterproof adhesive dressing, which should be changed every 8 days. The sutures used are absorbable.

Wearing a compression bra for one month is recommended. Intense physical activity should be avoided during the first month.

Results of areola reduction

The results of the surgery are noticeable immediately, even with some swelling, and continue to improve over the weeks following the procedure. In the long term, the majority of patients experience stable and lasting results.

Beyond its positive aesthetic effects, this surgery significantly enhances personal well-being and patient satisfaction.
