Botox injections

Botox, or botulinum toxin, has been used in medicine for over 20 years and offers a range of applications in cosmetic procedures. Botox injections for aesthetic purposes are a quick, long-lasting, effective, and safe technique. They are non-invasive and reversible, as the product gradually breaks down and is completely eliminated after approximately 6 months.

Botox is extremely well-tolerated, and allergic reactions are rare. The treatment can be repeated to maintain its effects.

Botox injections overview

Commonly known by the brand name “Botox”, botulinum toxin has become a leading treatment for facial rejuvenation. Injected, it relaxes the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles, refreshing facial features.

Botulinum toxin is a substance naturally produced by the bacterium that causes botulism, a serious illness leading to muscle paralysis. Medical-grade botulinum toxin is manufactured in laboratories using advanced biotechnological methods to ensure maximum safety. It has been used for nearly 30 years in various medical fields such as neurology, ophthalmology, and pediatrics to relax muscles causing abnormalities or pain. Botulinum toxin blocks the secretion of acetylcholine, a molecule that facilitates communication between nerves and muscles, thereby preventing muscle contraction. The toxin is naturally eliminated by the body, and its effects wear off within 4 to 8 months.

How botox injection sessions are conducted

During the initial consultation, the surgeon examines the areas to be treated and discusses the patient’s expectations. The practitioner will then determine if Botox injections are appropriate, and possibly suggest other non-invasive complementary techniques (e.g., hyaluronic acid) to achieve a harmonious result.

The session takes place in the clinic, without anesthesia, and usually lasts about 20 minutes. After preparing the treatment area, the doctor performs precise injections to reshape it. Botox is very fluid and can be administered with ultra-fine needles. The injection is nearly painless, though deeper in some cases to reach the muscle.

The product starts to work immediately, but optimal results are typically seen after about 15 days. It takes a few hours for the product to settle, and a few additional days for the facial muscles to fully relax. A follow-up consultation is usually scheduled. If the result is not satisfactory, the practitioner may perform additional injections.

Side effects and contraindications of botox treatment

Medical-grade botulinum toxin is generally well-tolerated and rarely causes allergic reactions. The most common side effects are related to the injection process itself, such as minor redness or bruising at the injection sites. Some patients prone to migraines may experience headaches.

Ptosis, a rare complication where the upper eyelid droops partially over the eye, can occur. Ptosis is temporary and resolves within 3 to 4 weeks. To prevent this, patients are advised to stay calm in the hours following the procedure, avoiding excessive use of other facial muscles to minimize toxin diffusion.

For about ten days before the consultation, it is recommended to avoid anticoagulants, anti-inflammatories, or certain antibiotics. Botox injections are contraindicated for individuals with certain autoimmune diseases, acute inflammatory conditions, or evolving allergic tendencies. Additionally, Botox is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. High-level athletes should be aware that injections may result in a minimal loss of muscle tone.
