Plastic surgery of the breast

Plastic surgery of the breast is one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery. It addresses both congenital and acquired imperfections of the chest.

Cosmetic breast surgery includes all aesthetic surgical interventions aimed at enhancing the appearance of the breasts. It is driven by aesthetic concerns expressed by patients. An initial consultation with the surgeon is necessary before proceeding with any operation: the patient discusses desired changes with the surgeon, who then guides the decision towards a specific choice. Sometimes, after the consultation, the patient and surgeon may agree that there is no need for surgery.

Indications for cosmetic breast surgery

Cosmetic breast surgeries are often performed on women aged 30 to 35 whose breast shape and overall harmony have been affected by pregnancy or multiple pregnancies, causing them not to regain their original shape.

Patients may also include women aged 50 to 60 who wish to restore their youthful breast appearance.

Minors may undergo surgery with parental consent only after their breasts have fully developed (around 16 or 17 years old), although cases involving minors are rare.

In some instances, breast surgery on a young patient can significantly improve their well-being and health while preventing future complications (such as in cases of breast hypertrophy).

Cosmetic breast surgery aims to correct breast imperfections such as sagging breasts (breast ptosis), underdeveloped breasts (breast hypotrophy), overly large breasts (breast hypertrophy), or asymmetrical breasts.

The surgeon must consider the patient’s physique before performing surgery to ensure harmonious and comfortable results.

Breast implants, subject to stringent controls, pose no health risks to patients as long as contraindications are observed.

Fat grafting into the breast (lipofilling) is a compelling alternative to implants, providing very natural results and gaining increasing popularity.

Procedure of cosmetic breast surgery

Cosmetic breast surgeries are commonly performed under general anesthesia, though local anesthesia is also an option. Prior to surgery, several examinations are necessary to ensure the safety of the planned cosmetic procedure. A health assessment is mandatory before surgery.

Recovery after cosmetic breast surgery

Typically, a single day of hospitalization following cosmetic breast surgery is enough. Recovery generally requires several days off work, and post-operative care varies based on the type of procedure performed.

Scars from breast surgery are usually subtle and their visibility depends on the surgical technique employed. Surgeons take great care to make scars as discreet as possible.

Ceasing smoking for at least one month prior to surgery is essential to optimize tissue healing. It is also advised to avoid aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs for 15 days before the operation.

Cost of breast cosmetic surgery

The prices for breast surgery depend on the technique used and whether it is covered by health insurance. An examination of the patient during consultation is necessary before determining the price of the procedure.
