Breast augmentation with implants is a common reason for consultation in breast surgery. While implants are durable, undergo regular checks, and are inserted safely, various reasons may lead to their removal.

What does breast implant removal involve?

Breast implant removal refers to the surgical procedure during which breast implants are removed from the breasts.

This operation, known as explantation or resection surgery, is reversible, as a woman can choose to undergo breast augmentation again in the future if she desires.

When should breast implants be removed?

After several years, breast implants may show signs of wear or damage. To prevent complications, the surgeon performs implant removal. Some patients choose not to replace them or opt for implant replacement.

Women also decide to remove their breast implants to return to a natural breast appearance, even in the absence of underlying issues.

Breast implant removal may also be necessary to address complications associated with implants (capsular contracture, malposition, rotation, implant rupture, leakage, infection).

How does breast implant removal procedure work?

Before proceeding with the removal of breast implants, several pre-operative appointments are scheduled to explain the procedure in detail to the patient and discuss post-operative care. These initial consultations allow the patient to address any concerns and ensure that the procedure can be conducted under optimal conditions.

The surgery takes place in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia, in the operating room.

During the operation, the plastic surgeon makes incisions to access the implants, carefully removes them, and takes measures to minimize damage to surrounding tissues. Incisions are often made through existing scars (around the areolas, under the breast, or in the natural fold of the breast).

After removing the implants, the surgeon may also perform a capsulectomy, which involves removing the fibrous capsule that forms around the implant. Sometimes, this capsule naturally forms as a reaction to the implant, but in some cases, it can contract, causing pain, breast distortion, or implant hardening, which are possible reasons for removal.

In some instances, breast implant removal may be followed by a breast lift procedure to restore breast shape and firmness.

Once the operation is completed, the surgeon closes the incisions using sutures.

What is the recovery like after breast implant removal?

Each patient’s recovery time can vary. However, recovery should include a period of rest with extremely limited or restricted physical activity.

Medications are prescribed to manage pain and prevent infections.

A compression bra is recommended to support the breasts during healing and reduce post-operative swelling. It should be worn day and night for the first few weeks.

Keeping your incisions clean and dry is essential to avoid infection. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully to care for your scars.

Results become noticeable after several months, as the breasts regain their original position and natural shape.

Breast implant removal: How much does it cost?

The cost of breast implant removal varies depending on the technique used and any associated procedures (breast lift or mastopexy).
