What is breast implant removal?

Breast implant removal refers to the surgical procedure during which breast implants are removed from the breasts.

This operation, known as explant surgery (explantation) or resection surgery, is reversible as a woman can undergo breast augmentation again in the future if desired.

General information

Breast deformities affect a large portion of the female population, varying in intensity from mild and partial breast deformity to complete malformation or absence of breast gland development.

Sometimes, these deformities are unknown to the patient (such as with tuberous breasts), who may seek consultation solely for breast augmentation.

Depending on the type and severity of the breast deformity, this procedure may be covered by health insurance.

There are two main causes:

  • Congenital breast deformities of genetic origin, which may occur alone or in combination with other malformations (tuberous breasts, supernumerary breasts or nipples, polymastia in women, etc.)
  • Breast deformities resulting from an accident or breast cancer surgery.

Current techniques in plastic and aesthetic breast surgery can correct these breast deformities. These may include:

The different types of breast malformations

Breast deformities are often misunderstood, and teenagers hesitate to discuss them with their parents. Consulting with an expert in breast deformities, who can diagnose the condition, reassure young women, and discuss various correction options, is crucial. Early intervention is essential to prevent these teenagers from developing body image issues.

The most well-known breast deformities include:

Tuberous breasts

Tuberous breasts are a common deformity where the chest has a narrow and tubular shape, often associated with small volume. The breast appears malformed, with a high inframammary fold and enlarged, prominent areolas. Breast asymmetry is also frequently observed.

Poland syndrome

Poland syndrome, though rare, presents with breast asymmetry due to partial or complete absence of the pectoralis major muscle. It can also involve deformities of the ribs, other thoracic muscles, and in rare cases, the hand on the affected side.

Breast hypoplasia

Breast hypoplasia (breast hypotrophy) refers to insufficient development of the breasts relative to a woman’s overall morphology. It is not just a matter of small breast size, as hypoplasia also involves a lack of glandular tissue that can make breastfeeding difficult or even impossible. Breasts may appear tubular or asymmetrical and may lack the typical shape and volume.

The surgical techniques for breast deformities

The first consultation with Dr. Sarfati is crucial for determining the breast deformity to be addressed. Optimal results can be achieved by combining various methods:

The selected techniques depend on the deformity, breast volume, and the amount of fat that can be extracted. For younger women, methods without the use of foreign bodies are preferred to ensure stability of results and to avoid future interventions for long-term implant replacement.

Pricing and reimbursement for breast deformity correction

The cost of treating breast deformities depends on the type of deformity and the technique considered for correction. A personalized quote will be provided during your initial consultation, following a comprehensive examination.

Please note that the surgical procedure may be eligible for reimbursement by the health insurance. Reimbursement may be considered, particularly in cases such as removal of 300g of breast tissue during breast reduction, or augmentation to correct absence of breast tissue or a 2-cup size difference between breasts.

A request in the form of prior approval is submitted to your primary health insurance fund, which will then validate coverage of expenses. You can discuss this further with Dr. Sarfati.
